The SIP protocol single handed changed the Telecom world introducing the concept of peer to peer calling setups which over night turned making a phone call into an IT application instead of being a service. In essence SIP was a paradigm shift. The new communications protocol SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) was designed to effectively setup Multimedia services dynamically between different end-points with  the ability to negotiate multiple different codecs for audio, video and potentially any other media types but  this protocol also contains a framework that allows SIP to be easily extended with special purpose with XML tags.
